5 Famous Indian Serial killers.

Here's a list of 5 of known convicted and executed serial killer from India.


There have been serial murders which had terrorized people and caused panic in the cities from time to time. Today I am writing about Thug Behram, murderer awarded with most killings and series of murder committed between late 1960's and 90's. Some of these murders were committed for money while some for sheer pleasure.

1. Thug Behram.
  Lived between East-India Company rule. He is considered on of the most profilic killers in the world. He the leader of cult of Thuggees in Avadh which comprised of around 50 men. He was suspected of killings 931 people by strangling. Havin him confessed "...of strangling 125 men with his own hands and seen strangulation of 150 more." His terror reign between 1790 and 1840. He was executed by hanging in 1840.
  Thuggee and Dacoity Department was established in India, which eradicated Thuggees by 1870. Most of them were expelled from country, executed or put in prison for life. Thuggee and Dacoity Department was later replaced by Central Criminal Intelligence Department in 1904. (Now Department of Criminal Intelligence.)
  "People of thuggee cult worshipped Kali Mata and had self-belief that they were born from her sweat. Thuggees would kill those people who were believed to be demons and keep their belongings. However they believed during killing not a single drop of blood should fall on floor and so killings were done by strangulation."

2.Raghav Raman also known as Pyscho Raman.
  Series of Brutal Murders were committed in 1965-66. 19 people were attacked out of which 9 died.   Homeless and hut dwellers were attacked. Raghav Raman was arrested. However none of the survivor remembered seeing this man, and so police let him go. The murdere striked back in 1968. All attacks were carried out using hard, blunt weapons.
  This led to Manhunt launched by police. Soon murderer was nabbed and got him confessed. He was indeed Raghav Raman. This time police got him confessed. He admitted killing 23 people in GIP Railway (Central Railway) in 1966 and dozens in the suburbs in 1968. He had previously spent 5 years in jail for robbery He also revealed he had raped and killed his sister.
  It was later discovered through medical analysis that Raghav Raman was schizophrenic. He believed 'people wanted to change his sex'; and since he was representative of 'kanoon', they were unsuccessful. He also believed that India was ruled by Akbar rule, Congress rule and British rule. He was sentenced to death but soon life imprisonment. (he was found to be incurably mentally ill). He died in 1995 of kidney trouble.

3.Kampatimar Shankariya
A native of Jaipur, India, 27-year-old Kampatimar Shankariya murdered 70+ people using hammer for over two years. In his confession he said, he did it for sheer pleasure. He was convicted in early 1979. He was hanged at Jaipur on May 16, 1979, the killer's last words were a gallows lament. "I have murdered in vain," he declared. "Nobody should become like me."

4.Auto Shankar
  In late 1988, over a period of approximately six months, nine teenage girls from the Thiruvanmiyur section of Chennai disappeared. In December, a girl reported that an autorickshaw driver attempted to abduct her in front of Wine shop. Working undercover in the wine shop, detectives learned that about auto driver named Shankar.
  Auto Shankar ran prostitution dens and transported alcoholic substances and drugs. His notorious influence peaked. His first victims were his part of his own inner circle. Lalitha ran away with Sudalaimuthu but soon Shankar and his associates got hold of them. Lalitha was murdered and buried in residential house, while Sudalaimuthu was set on fire.  His remains were disposed off in Bay of Bengal.  It took next 15 months to search and dug out Lalitha's remain.  His next victims were Mohan, Sampath and Govindara. The gang had a quarrel with these men over picking up woman (flesh trade). Shankar and his gang beat them up, murder and buried. Along with it Shankar was also involed in murder of Ravi.  Along with his associates, he was charged with murder of six individual. Shankar had escaped prison once but soon traced to Odisha. Three wardens were arrested in helping Shankar escape.
  Shankar was hanged in 1995. Cinema was considered sole responsible for his motive. A month before his execution, Shankar stated he kidnapped girls for powerful politicians. It was dismissed. 

5.Rajendra Jakkal, Dilip Sutar, Shantaram Kanhoji Jagtap and Munawar Harun Shah.
  Series of ten Murders were committed by them known as Abyankar-Joshi Serial Murder between 1976-77 in city of Pune. Nylon ropes were used in killing the victims. Some bodies were tied up to iron or stones inserted into bodies and weighed down into lake or river, while some were left hanging in residential home. Some of the bodies were stripped. Valuables and money was stolen and motive of murder was clear. The identical type of knot lead police to conclusion that all murders were executed by same people. Actions were taken to prevent murders in future.
  Soon Rajendra Jakkal, Dilip Sutar, Shantaram Kanhoji Jagtap and Munawar Harun Shah were arrested. All four were students of arts from same college. The gang had acquired bad name for stealing and drinking. All four were tried. The case lasted for 4 months and sentenced to death. Appeals for Pardon was made which was denied by High Court, Supreme court and The President. All four were hanged in 1983.
